Hi there, I’m John...

I have been a qualified teacher for 20 years. I've worked in many schools, including dedicated SEN centres and mainstream schools, primary and secondary, so have a clear understanding of all ages and how best to access their full potential.

About me

I started tutoring in 2010 and now I exclusively tutor and have refined this method of teaching as a specialism. I ONLY tutor and run Tuition Matters. Your child's learning is my utmost priority.

I have been a qualified teacher for 20 years. I have worked in many schools, including dedicated SEN centres and mainstream schools, primary and secondary, so have a clear understanding of all ages and how best to access their full potential. I was also head of maths for a small private school, for which I was head-hunted because of Tuition Matters and my success in helping pupils achieve their goals and grades.

I love the challenge of taking a pupil who may be a couple of grades away from the pass grade they want and working a bespoke programme through to get them to that success point. One-to-one tuition is so satisfying because you KNOW it makes a difference, and if the pupil puts in the effort, they WILL succeed with my tuition.

The school system often can't cater for enough individual needs, which of course is tricky with so many pupils in a class, and general volume and staffing issues. I love helping pupils that have really struggled to engage and get them enjoying the academic experience, because learning should be fun! Though I give up my week nights and weekends and holidays - I would rather do this and know I am making a huge difference than just ‘managing’ in a class room set up during the standard school day.

I started tutoring as an add on to my school teaching. The amount of pupils mushroomed, especially through word of mouth as my successes mounted, so in the end I had to leave the classroom and focus 100% on tutoring. Initially going from house to house, however once the Pandemic started, and lockdowns of course, my existing clients all switched to video calling. Same service as being in a kitchen or living room- but presented much better opportunities with tech and also enabled me to structure exact lesson times better and of course take on more pupils.

Whilst based in West Wales, thanks to video capability, I now tutor pupils everywhere - London, Cardiff, all over Wales and England in fact, and I have also started tutoring expat students in Dubai. The chance to help so many more students globally is an amazing exciting challenge and opportunity.

What I do in my spare time...

I don’t have a great deal- as I love to teach - however! I’m a keen musician along with being a walking fanatic - I belong to the Ramblers and love walking the Pembrokeshire countryside where I live.

I also love cycling, live music and films.
